Talk title:

Understanding and Addressing Deafness-Related Stigma Through Family Communication in Ghana and Germany: Perspectives for Collaboration with TU Dortmund

Abstract

In Ghana, families often grapple with the stigma surrounding deafness, while Germany's inclusive policies sometimes mask communication barriers. How do family dynamics shape deaf experiences in these distinct contexts? This presentation explores the interplay of family communication, stigma and support among deaf individuals in Ghana and Germany, highlighting opportunities for collaborative research and community engagement between Ghanaian institutions and TU Dortmund University. The presentation will examine family beliefs, communication practices and societal attitudes that either reinforce or challenge stigma, and discuss strategies for promoting inclusive environments. I invite researchers, practitioners and Deaf community members to join us in this effort to address deafness-related stigma and develop positive identity.
